How to Apply Hair Conditioner Correctly

To get a great benefit from hair conditioner, you need to know to buy and how to use it properly. Most hair conditioner is applied while in the shower and left for a short time. Deep-conditioning products that are applied on the outside of the shower and left in for a long time.


Choose the correct conditioner for your hair type. For fine or thin hair, use a light conditioner especially for fine hair. For chemically damaged hair, select a deep-conditioning treatment. With colored hair, use a conditioner especially for color-treated hair, along with a weekly deep-conditioning treatment. Long hair benefits from a weekly deep-conditioning treatment, while short hair doesn’t need a conditioner unless it is colored, dry or damaged. Oily hair does not require a conditioner. You should pair your shampoo and conditioner to the same formula since they can interact with each other. For example if you are using a conditioner for colored hair, use a shampoo for colored hair as well.

Start by shampooing your hair and thoroughly rinsing it. Squeeze out excess water from your hair.

Place a quarter-sized amount of conditioner into the palm of your hand and rub your hands together.

Run your hands through your hair from root to the tip. Keep a wide-toothed comb in the shower with you and use it to comb the conditioner evenly through your hair.

Do not dig into your scalp; gently massage your hair from scalp to tips. Leave the conditioner on for the designated time the bottle indicates. If it does not say anything, leave on for at least one minute.

Rinse your hair thoroughly with warm water. Finish by running cool water over your hair for 20 to 30 seconds.
